What Will Ford Do Next?
Alright so maybe I was wrong last week about the Aldous Huxley’s views, but I still find it strange that someone would write about this stuff because it sounds pretty sick to me. However, that is just my opinion. So why do cultures create narratives? I am pretty sure it is just the simple fact that they want their culture and stories passed on from generation to generation. Can there be a different meaning? In Brave New World it states the “cleanliness is the next fordliness.” Now I believe that this means they are trying to incorporate what they understand from the past and they are creating their own narrative for themselves. I would not say they have technically passed the beliefs that Ford viewed on, but simply that they are beginning to worship him in the way he did his business. They believe that Ford was a perfect man and that his work was clean and precise and that it deserved to be honored for generations to come. Now in a way that life is created. The people believe that Ford was a perfect man and that he embodied characteristics which made him brilliant. They thought of him as the messiah, (which of course he is not) that was to be preached about for the generations to come. They believed that they could create a story that could be based off of morals that should be followed. It would corrupt the minds of the community and soon all would be directed to the beliefs of the new world. Human life would change as we know it and people would pass on false testimony to the upcoming generations. The story that they create will be one based off of production and how effectively things are able to be processed. Henry Ford would be their figure of worship and they will pass on stories to all people about the perfect person he was and how effect he created the world to be.

Hey Ryan,
ReplyDeleteAlthough I am not Christian, I do agree with your view of Brave New World. The concept of living in such a world is very immoral and wrong. However, there was one part of the book I did enjoy reading. When they were in the reservation it was such a contrast, and to read about how the two world collided and mixed inside John were quite interesting. He became an individual because he was different from both worlds, and he was alone because both world are more group oriented instead of individual oriented. I like how you addressed the whole thing about them worshiping Ford, even though he is not an actual messiah. Even when a society is as single minded as the one in BNW, the people still need something to believe in, and Ford is that person. I don't think they think of him as a God, but maybe more of a leader. He is sorta like Buddha, a normal human being who had certain ideals that other people followed him for. The people in BNW follow Ford as an inspiration of productivity. Although their idea of what productivity is is not neccesarily right, and is completely wrong to us, those are the beliefs they have found happiness in.
Alright Ryan, I really liked a lot of things you said in this blog but what I like most is that you say exactly how you feel. First of all I liked what you said about myths and how they were created to spread ideas from generation to generation. I also liked how you related that idea later to prove a point when you said, "They believe that Ford was a perfect man and that his work was clean and precise and that it deserved to be honored for generations to come." However, I'm not sure people in that society saw Ford as their messiah but more as a role model. They respected him for his creation of the assembily line but I'm not sure they believe that he was sent by God because they probably don't believe in a God. Anyways, good job!
ReplyDeleteHey Jones! Well I agree with what you have to say here in this fine blog. One thing I just did not get, while reading the book, was how they could worship Ford like God. Because for all I know yes, he created a more efficient way to run a factory and productivity which are two things that Brave New World are centered around but what makes him God-like? And why did they have to cut off the tops of crosses so they look like T, the Ford Model T? It’s just completely insane to me. I don’t understand why they picked Ford out of all the people because as a person that wasn’t any of his beliefs or anything that he did besides the efficiency that touched them, so why make him the almighty one, whom they worship as a God? But overall nice blog Ryan. I didn’t really comment besides just sorta going off on one thing but I agree with your viewpoints. Good job!
